Just right in time for its fifth birthday Drake Records is proud to present the 7th release so far:
A new EP by DJ Phoney (also known as Ernest Drake) entitled “Cookies” featuring four little instrumental ditties that can be filed under “Electric Soul”, “Rare Groove Sample Slaying”, “Instrumental Hip Hop” or “dealing with the past and present”.

Different from the previous single, which was a hand-crafted library funk-tribute, “Cookies” goes back to a strict use of samples only.
Phoney’s production handwriting is all over the four tunes – deep vibes and heavy groove. The songs bounce in a way that pays tribute to the original material (and the sound of the 70s), some classical Golden Era-feel as well as a more up to date sample-slaying approach.
...and good luck trying to find the sample sources! In some cases that might turn out as (almost) impossible.

The opening track “Letting Go” is a tribute to Phoney’s granny and expresses some of the feel of what it means to finally having to let go... if the massive bass and guitar lick doesn’t get you on that one – the melancholic horns will!

“Talking To The Spirits” is in a brighter mood (with a bit of dramatic shining through during the middle part) although far from a lightweight. A minimalstic piece – mostly led by organ notes – with emphasis on the accentuated drums.

The third tune “Ernst” comes along with a magic mood and atmosphere. A unique blend of the Rarest Groove and Soul. Don’t even start looking for the original main sample...

“Cut-Ties” closes the “Cookies” EP with another catchy bassline between melancholy and subtle suspense, uplifted by a horn break, garnished with some cuts.

Saying goes there might be a secret fifth track floating around somewhere that might pop up when the complete release is purchased...

The cover artwork (an optical tribute to Dilla’s “Donuts”) was realized by artist Richard There.
