After a 3 year break this new single by DJ Phoney comes like a clip round the ear.
It's hardly possible to sound more vintage, garage and moody. "Locked-In" is a slap in the face of modern 'brick wall' productions; raw drums, Fuzz & wah-wah guitar, grinding organ... the elements of the song sound as unadorned as it gets.
Following an intro and the first part, almost like an accidentally recorded jam, a drum and Wah-break drops in, just to be followed by full instrumental forces and a long psychy guitar solo (with Saz- and Sitar-reminiscences) plus percussions.
„Locked-In“ builds up to a final crescendo and disappears through ghostly repeated words.

If your musical realm allows cornerstones like Barış Manço, Budos Band, Judge, earliest Funkadelic, Hendrix, Electric Prunes, The Attack and several rather unknown US and UK Freakbeat and Garage Psychedelic outfits – consider yourself the perfect listener.
Also, a good stereo set-up will be helpful. Headphones will do the trick. There's some vintage STEREO experimentation going on you might wanna catch. Seriously.

lyrics

There's a fractional bit of lyrics embedded in the tune; words that primarily serve an atmospheric background function but nonetheless they have meaning. The song's about being trapped in society and oneself - one induces the other. There's an immanent Kafkaesque to schizophrenic aspect in capitalism. I've been pouring my sentiments towards this issue into "Locked-In" and the brilliant cover art by Bjoern Candidus serves the intention perfectly.
